Do Weighted Stuffed Animals Help Anxiety?

One of the hot topic items people are getting into is weighted items. Weighted blanket. Weighted face masks. Weighted stuffed animals. The reason they’re getting into these items is for one purpose. Managing their anxiety. Or at least, that’s the intent. Why do weighted items help with anxiety you ask? Well, let’s explore this.

Do Weighted Stuffed Animals or Blankets work?

One of the more important questions is, do these products even work? Do they help manage my anxiety? Well… yes and no? Here’s the thing. Scientifically, they are starting to show promise in being able to assist with managing symptoms of anxiety, autism, and more. However, there has been no concrete evidence that they work. It is not a medicine. But, it doesn’t need to be. We do know that sensory treatments can be effective in treating a variety of symptoms. Massages are beneficial. Cold/warm water. Physical therapy. etc. So, why not a heavy blanket?

Many people report feeling better when having a weighted blanket on them or using these new weighted products. One study did report “The use of weighted blankets is a safe and potentially effective way to help individuals in a psychiatric facility manage anxiety”. Anecdotally, people love heavy blankets on them. It feels like a hug. People love hugs. There are also “claims” that state it helps you feel as if you’re a baby being swaddled again. But I like the idea of a hug instead.

WARNING: Do not put them on infants, babies, small children, or the elderly who cannot remove the weight off of them, AND probably don’t sleep with them.

But, most of the studies are exploring the usage of heavy blankets. More items are starting to come out. Such as weighted stuffed animals. I am not sure how you would use it differently than a normal stuffed animal but, it does sound like a great workout. Regardless, if it gives a sensory pleasurable experience that helps calm you or a child down. That’s all that matters. As long as you are safe with it.

People are starting to use them to sleep. Which, the concern is the extra weight laying on your chest while you sleep. Because when you sleep, your breathing slows down. Add more weight to that, it can be risky. So use it with caution.

I would love to hear more of your experiences with weighted blankets if you have purchased or used one before! Comment below.
